Uniform Policy

St. Mary’s RC Primary School students wear their uniform with pride. Our uniform shows that we are part of the St. Mary’s RC Primary School community. We have the highest expectations from our students with regards to school uniform and appearance, and strongly believe that our high standards promote positive behaviour, support effective teaching and learning and contribute to the ethos of the school.

School Uniform

We have school uniform and we encourage all our children to wear their uniform smartly. All items of uniform must be labelled. It consists of the following:

  • royal blue/sky blue/white polo shirt or shirt
  • royal blue jumper/cardigan
  • charcoal/grey/black trousers/skirt/culottes
  • grey/white socks
  • blue and white checked dress for summer if desired
  • sensible black leather school shoes, NOT boots, shoes with heels or trainers
  • indoor black plimsolls

(Children in Class 1 are encouraged to decorate their plimsolls so that they can identify them easily and they should bring a labelled pair of Wellingtons in their first week that can be left in school for outdoor play).

PE Kit

We require that our pupils change for PE activities. They need an appropriately labelled PE kit consisting of the following:

  • trainers
white socks
  • white T-shirt
black/blue shorts
  • black/blue tracksuit for outdoor games in cold weather

PE kit should be brought to school on Monday mornings and only taken home on Fridays. This will allow flexibility for their class teacher.

If a child does not have their PE kits they will miss PE lessons and a letter will be sent home.

General notes on appearance:

Shirts should be tucked in at all times.

A summer uniform is available and can be worn during the summer term (after Easter until October half term).


  • Jewellery should not be worn or brought into school.
  • If girls have pierced ears, ONE pair of discreet studs may be worn. NYCC policy states that earrings must be removed for PE lessons for health and safety reasons. If your child is unable to remove the earrings themselves they should not come to school with them in on PE days.
  • Boys are NOT allowed to wear earrings or studs in school.
  • No other body piercing, i.e. nose piercings are allowed.
  • Girls in EYFS/KS1 are NOT allowed to wear earrings or studs, due to the nature of the curriculum, and the fact that the pupils access the outdoor area on a daily basis.


  • Hair should be one natural colour, no hair dye.
  • The style should be appropriate for school, hair should not obstruct pupils vision.
  • Pupils with long hair must be tied back.
  • Boys hair should be no shorter than Grade 2.
  • Tramlines, patterns and sculpting is not allowed.

Students must not wear:

  • Hoodies, sportswear or sweatshirts.
  • Any kind of boots (wellingtons are allowed in wet weather/snow but must be changed when inside the school buildings).
  • Leather or denim clothing.
  • Trainers are NOT allowed to be worn at any time other than for PE lessons and clubs.
  • Make up and nail varnish should NOT be worn to school.

Non-compliance with the uniform and appearance policy:

Parents of students who do not wear the correct uniform, will be contacted and requested to bring in a change of clothes for their child .

Students who wear make-up/nail varnish or excess jewellery will be required to remove these. Items of jewellery will be confiscated by the teacher to be collected by the parent.

Persistent and defiant non-compliance with the policy will result in an appropriate sanction which may include reflection or exclusion.
